Journey Through Britain is a travelogue by Yorkshireman and travel writer John Hillaby. It was first published in 1968 and documents a solo tramp from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
“I left at seven o’clock in the morning and I have been asked to say that my wife was there to see me off. There isn’t, in fact, much else that I can say. It was misty. I couldn’t see much. I could hear nothing except the twittering of invisible larks. I felt dizzy, not from the height of the clifftops nor elation at the start. The feeling came from an unfamiliar breakfast of cold roast fowl and champagne. That soon wore off.”
As well as an entertaining description of the journey, Hillaby also provides these evocative photographs of England and Scotland.
They were printed on glossy paper glued to the middle of my cheap 1978 paperback reprint of his journey. It only took a light tug and they had come detached from the spine and found their way into my scanner.
